5) Interior Design

Designing is the blend of artistic talents and creativity. Design encompasses a number of different fields. It can be mainly divided into four ie, Fashion designing, Product designing, Graphic designing and Interior designing. Fashion designing deals with clothing and textiles, product designing with designing the products and graphic designing deals with designing for websites, movies, logos, signage, etc. Interior designing is the arrangement of living space i.e organizing, managing and planning of the interiors of rooms at homes, offices, retail shops, showrooms, hotels, airports, exhibition halls, conference centers, theatres, TV and film studios and commercial establishments etc. The objective of designing space is to achieve functionality and to create the right kind of atmosphere for the right budget. Interior designing as a specialisation became popular only in the last few years.

Earlier architects would do all the design work, both exteriors and interiors themselves. Of late people have become more conscious of the design, layout and placement of their interiors, for offices, factories as well as residences. This has opened the door for a large number of professional interior designers. Most interior designers specialise in a particular area. For example, some may concentrate on business design, while others focus on residential design and landscape designing. Still others may specialize further by focusing on particular rooms, such as kitchens or baths. With a client’s tastes, needs, and budget in mind, interior designers prepare drawings and specifications for non-load-bearing interior construction, this includes choice and decoration of walls, floors, roofs, choice and placement of furniture and other indoor objects, window treatments and other indoor objects, lighting and control of visual and sound effects.

Interior Designer should be aware of the change in trends and keep up with the latest styles. Interior designing as a course has become popular in the last few years, there are only a few institutions offering reputed programmes in interior designing in India. School of Interior Design, Ahmedabad offers Five-year programme and J.J School of Arts, Mumbai offers 4 years Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). Unlike many other careers, design inevitably requires both a strong aptitude as well as a creative talent in the field.

Eligibility : The 4 years Bachelor of fine Arts (BFA) programme offers specialisation in Interior Design.

Job Prospects and career option : Interior design is one of the fastest growing professional fields. There are lots of employment opportunities for interior designers in various fields. Interior Designers can find employment with architects or architectural firms, builders, public works department, hotel and resort chains, hospitals, town planning bureau, regional and metropolitan development works, private consultancies, studios and theaters and exhibition organizers. etc. They can also set up their own business. Once they make a name, it is a very lucrative profession.

Besides new structures, Interior Designers also plan the interiors of existing structures that are undergoing renovation or expansion. The first step in developing a new design or altering an existing one is to determine the needs of the client, the ultimate function for which the design is intended, and its appeal to customers or users. When creating a design, designers often begin by researching the desired design characteristics, such as size, shape, weight, color, materials used, cost, ease of use, fit and safety. After consulting with the client, Designers then prepare sketches or diagrams by hand or with the aid of a computer to illustrate the vision for the design. In big projects, a creative director or a product development team of designers create detailed designs, using drawings, a structural model, computer simulations etc.

Interior design offers excellent opportunities for those who wish to be self employed, or work part time. It is one of the few professions where one can operate from home with a minimal investment. Designers sometimes supervise assistants who assist them to carry out their creations. Increasingly, designers are using computers to plan layouts, because computers make it easy to change plans to include ideas received from the client. Computers have become essential for many designers, especially those in industrial and graphic design
Remuneration : Interior design is an immensely rewarding profession.

6) Security Analyst
Introduction

The economic growth and liberalization in India has had a positive effect on the capital markets as well. As the stock markets boom, more and more people tend to invest in the capital markets. The investors may take their own decisions regarding which securities to buy or hold or sell, or they may consult their stockbrokers for advice. The stockbroker utilizes the expertise of the research department of his firm to provide this kind of information and the people involved in such research are called securities analysts or market analysts. The job of a securities analyst is to research and evaluate companies, find out their profitability, look for indications of growth and expansion, project the company's future earnings and on the basis of their observations, make recommendations to clients on which securities to buy or sell.

The field of securities research is a discipline within the financial services industry and securities analysts are also known as research analysts, securities analysts, market analysts, financial analysts or simply as analysts. The job prospects of securities analysts are tied to the stock market with the bull market leading to an increase in hiring people and bear markets causing layoffs. Analysts find employment in brokerage firms, securities firms, mutual and pension funds, investment banks, merchant banks etc. They can also start their own consultancies.

Securities analysts may be employed as Sell Side Analysts- such analysts work for broker-dealers and indirectly for broker dealer trading customers, or as Buy Side Analysts- who work for institutional investors such as hedge funds, mutual funds, pension funds, proprietary trading operation of banks and brokers, endowments and insurance companies. Some also work as independent analysts, i.e they sell research to buy side or sell side firms and they themselves do not engage in securities transactions.

Some of the major players in trading and stock broking in India include companies like Kotak Securities Ltd, Angel Broking, Karvy Stockbroking, Anand Rathi, Geojit Financial Services Ltd, JRG Securities Ltd. etc. The big international players in this field are Bloomberg, Thomson-Reuters and financial news organization Dow Jones Newswires. These companies employ analysts in their research departments. In India, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the authorized body which regulates the operations of stock exchanges, banks and other financial institutions. Similarly, other countries have their regulating body and licensing authorities which regulate the operations of capital markets and finance professionals in the respective countries.

An ideal candidate for the job of securities analyst should have a strong sense of purpose. They should be able to handle heavy work load, prioritize and complete work under strict deadlines, work as part of a team and be able to keep abreast of new technologies and developments in this field. With a lot of scope for growth and specialization the job offers new challenges everyday and is quite prestigious and well paying too.
Eligibility : The eligibility for entering this field is an MBA. The field is also open to candidates with a bachelor's / masters degree and experience in the financial services industry or statistical research. Trainee positions are available to candidates with bachelor's degree in business administration, finance or economics Or those with post graduate degree in commerce. Although there is no mandated training programme for analysts, it is often required that analysts earn an MBA if they do not possess one.

Knowledge of subjects like engineering, biotechnology, pharmacy etc in addition to subjects like accountancy, economics and statistics gives analysts an upper edge in their field as this gives them a better understanding of those fields and can help them in making investment decisions in those sectors.

Analysts should have computer, analytical, mathematical and problem solving skills. The job of an analysts is such that they are required to explain their findings and recommendations to others and thus, should have excellent presentation skills, self-confidence, maturity as well as the ability to work alone. An analyst should also posses skills like strong attention to detail, a drive for research, an understanding of tax laws, money markets and economy in general. In addition to this, people skills and salesmanship are also important.

To be successful in this field, the candidates should have a feel for the market swings, they should have knowledge about stocks and shares, and logical and analytical ability. Candidates need to be tactful when dealing with clients and should be patient and should possess keen business expertise. There is tremendous work pressure as large volumes of money are involved and the profession carries a high risk profile as professional growth depends on the fortunes of the share market, over which an individual has no control.

The University of Pune in collaboration with the Mumbai Stock Exchange is conducting training programmes in capital market studies..

Job Prospectus and Career Options : securities analysts job involves a lot of reading, research, meeting people, writing etc. The analyst has to study company history, and about its products and services. He or she may do so by referring books and trade publications, financial reports, by studying the public records of the company, or by participating in public conference calls or using reference services like Standard and Poor's Outlook etc. Based on this preliminary research, the analyst may shortlist companies in a particular industry he or she is dealing with and then proceed to study the same thoroughly. Analysts usually study an entire industry, observing and assessing the current trends in business practices and industry competition. They must keep abreast of new regulations and policies that may affect the industry as well as monitor the changes taking place in the economy, as such happenings affect the earnings of the companies.

Once the analyst has short listed companies which promise to be good investment opportunities, the next step is meeting the top management of the concerned companies and gathering detailed information about them. After having collected detailed information about companies the analyst has to prepare a report on the company.

Analysts may use spreadsheet and statistical software packages to analyze financial data, spot trends and develop forecasts, write reports and make presentations. A major and important part of an analyst's job is writing reports. The report should be lucid, concise and persuasive. The report consists of a description of the business and the company's investment potential and it may also project future earnings. The analyst may summarize the report with ratings such as "buy", "sell", "over perform", "hold" etc. Once the report is ready the analyst has to use his/ her marketing skills to sell his/ her services to traders, brokers and investors by making recommendations about investing opportunities and convincing them to buy or sell the concerned stocks and securities.

Success in this field depends on performance or reputation. If an analyst's judgment is consistently correct which means they are profitable, his/her performance record as well as reputation gets a boost. The more outstanding performance record an analyst has, the more successful he/or she can be and success in this field translates to good pay packets and compensation too.

An analysts work is very time consuming in that analysts are required to put in long work hours. They need to travel a lot- visiting companies, attending conferences, conventions and tradeshows. Their work requires constant attention and is quite demanding and absorbing. They need to take quick decisions as the stock market may fluctuate and thus need to keep cool in situations where the markets may turn bearish.

Analysts can work their way up to become senior financial analysts or associates after 3 or 4 years of work at some firm. They can progress to become investment bankers, investment advisors or financial consultants. Some may even become portfolio analysts and further become portfolio managers. Portfolio managers however require licensing from SEBI.

Remuneration : MBA's and post graduates with professional qualifications can earn Rs.12000 and above at the entry level. Many employers may give
bonuses which can be equal to or double the beginning analyst's salary. This is actually the performance based commission given in addition to the salary. The earnings of top professionals can go up to lacs and crores

Though the popularity of radio had suffered badly with the arrival of Television and Internet, the opening of the FM radio to private channels has infused a new life to radio. Radio Jockeying is an exciting, promising and challenging career for those who have a passion for music. It is the only profession in which one may be recognized by their voice.
Radio Jockeys are those who anchor music programmes on radio. The task of a RJ is to entertain the listeners by playing music or conveying messages in a most attractive and sophisticated way. They play requests from listeners, interview guests, manage contests and also provide information on the music, weather and traffic. This is a profession which requires a lot of hard work and presence of mind. It is the performance of these Radio Jockeys that makes or mars the radio station. Mostly youngsters are preferred in this field as they have new ideas, concepts and are bubbling with enthusiasm.

Every successful Radio Jockey has their own style of communicating. To make an imprint in the listeners heart, apart from a good voice, the Radio Jockey should be warm, friendly, spontaneous, dynamic and must possess good communication skills. 10) Technical writing
Technical writing or Technical communication is all about communicating an idea to particular readers in an easily understandable way. The field is gaining more importance in this current period of fast technological advancement. Companies need the help of a Technical writer or Technical communication professional, in order to translate or explain the technical usage of their products in simple language so that even a common man who could not understand the technical words and language could figure out the advantages or the operation of their products or services. In short, Technical writers specialise in writing technology for non-technical persons.

A technical writer writes reports that any technically oriented professional / expert/specialist do as part of their regular job. They write ‘how to use’ manuals, project reports, online help files, instruction and installation guides, make graphical presentations and brochures for products of various industries like IT, consumer products, medical , journals etc. A technical writer, who works with an engineer writes engineering and designing information for common people. Usually he or she has to help an user to understand a product and how to use it. For that, one should know the product and understand its technology well although he or she is not an expert in that. A technical writer develops an expertise in a particular technical area for which one is working for, and whatever he writes or says about the field, is termed as technical communication.

A technical writer should have an interest in science and technology. And he should also have researching skill as he has to collect information through books, internet and some times he needs to interview people who are the technological experts in the field. The technical writer should also possess good command over English and should know how to present a matter in an easily understandable manner. A technical writer can find work in various firms such as advertising agencies, IT companies, Newspapers and magazines etc

If you have good command over English language and confidence that you can understand the technology and simplify the technical language to a user friendly one, then you can choose technical writing as your career. TWIN (Technical Writers of India) and Society for Technical Communication (STC), India are two online services that help Indian technical writers.

Eligibility : There is no formal education in the field of technical communication. Degree (preferably post graduation) or diploma holders preferably in Journalism and mass communication, English literature, science or IT with good language skills can become a technical writer. Having computer literacy and knowledge of software applications will help candidates in this profession, especially in the IT sector. There are very few Indian universities/ institutes that offer certificate courses in technical writing as a mainstream. University-level courses in Technical Communication is offered by the Dept. of Mass Communication, Calicut University in Kerala as an optional paper in their Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ) course and a short-term program is offered by Stella Maris College, Chennai.

But there are several foreign institutions which offer degree programs, certifications, and theory in the field. Besides these, many online courses are there which help one to become a technical writer.

Technical-writing courses are writing-intensive. A course in Technical Writing teaches candidates the clear, concise and understandable way of writing, editing and proof reading a technical subject matter which is appropriate for a specific audience. It helps in developing skills needed to produce a technical report, using special format items like headings, lists, simple techniques for putting graphics into reports and special notices wherever needed. And such courses also help one to understand writing software tools like Microsoft word, PageMaker, Frame Maker, Rob help and Front page etc. But most technical writers learn on the job.

Personal skills

This is an interesting career for a creative writer, who can comprehend and communicate highly technical subjects in a way that even a non-specialist could understand. A very good skill in writing and speaking English language is a must for becoming a technical writer. He or she should have good research and communication skill because they have to gather information about the product using many medias like Internet, books etc. Some time they may have to interview people who are experts in the field to make a good write-up. Design skill, especially for multimedia presentations, is also a plus for this profession. Writers who think differently and have innovative ideas of presentation can excel in the job. A technical writer should familiar with the specified subject area apart from technically skilled or trained.

Job Prospectus and Career Options : Though there are no formal institutions in India to teach technical writing as a mainstream course, the job opportunities are rising in India. Today with the increase in outsourcing the field has seen an explosive rise in the global market as well. One who wish to take technical writing as a career could find jobs at various firms such as advertising agencies, soft ware developing companies, and even in Newspapers and magazines. The highest demand for technical writers is generated by the IT industry. If one does not want to work under an organization, he/ she can work as a freelance writer. Freelancers can take up work on a contract basis with companies for a period of time and will be paid for the work he does. As far as freelance writing has concerned freelancer should meet the dead line that the company puts forward and for that he needs a personal computer with internet connectivity that will help him in researching the materials and also help him to communicate with his payer.

Companies need Technical writers for translating and making the technical language to simple language thus helping customers or potential customers understand the advantages or the operation of their new products or services, while newspapers and magazines ask for articles for specified areas like science and technology. The areas of applications of the field involve writing Technical Reports of not only technical specification of products but also include reports on organizational policies and procedures presenting rules and regulations that an organization and its members are expected to perform; evaluation and feasibility reports; primary research reports which presents findings and interpretation from laboratory or field research; Technical background report suited to a specific group of readers who has specific needs and uses for the information; Progress Report to inform a supervisor, associate, or customer about progress made on a particular project over a period of time; Business plans, a document used to start a new business or get funding for a business; User guide's containing instructions on installing, using, or troubleshooting a hardware or software product etc.

Indian companies like TCS, Infosys Technologies Ltd, Sun Microsystems, InfoTech etc often call technical writers for their companies. Apart from that, online job sites also help to find jobs in this field.

If one does not want to continue in this field he can diversify attention to advertising and journalism.
Remuneration : An experienced writer/ editor may get up to Rs.15000 to 25000. A freelance writer gets paid as per the contract.

13) Floriculture

Floriculture or flower farming as it is popularly called is a discipline of Horticulture, and is the study of growing and marketing flowers and foliage plants. Floriculture includes cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for sales or for use as raw materials in cosmetic and perfume industry and the pharmaceutical sector. The persons associated with this field are called floriculturists.

Officially Floriculture began in the late 1800's in England where flowers were grown in large estates, and now has spread to most other countries as well. The floral industry today has grown to much larger proportions and offers a wide scope for growth and profits. The countries involved in the import of flowers are Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy and Japan while those involved in export are Columbia, Israel, Spain and Kenya.

In India, Floriculture industry comprises flower trade, production of nursery plants and potted plants, seed and bulb production, micro propagation and extraction of essential oils. Though the annual domestic demand for the flowers is growing at a rate of over 25% and international demand at around Rs 90,000 crore India's share in international market of flowers is negligible. India has a blooming future as far as floriculture is concerned. Enormous genetic diversity, varied agro climatic conditions, versatile human resources etc offer India a unique scope for judicious employment of existing resources and exploration of avenues yet untouched.

Karnataka is the leader in floriculture, accounting for 75% of India's total flower production. The state has the highest area under modern cut flowers, and 40 flower growing and exporting units. The expert committee set up by Govt. of India for promotion of export oriented floriculture units has identified Bangalore, Pune, New Delhi and Hyderabad as the major areas suitable for such activity especially for cut flowers. APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) is the registering authority for such units.

The employment opportunities in this field are as varied as the nature of work itself. One can join the field of floriculture as farm/estate managers, plantation experts and supervisors, project coordinators etc. Research and teaching are some other avenues of employment in the field. Marketing of Floriculture products for different ventures is emerging as a potential segment of this field. Besides one can work as consultant, landscape architect etc with proper training. One can also work as entrepreneur and offer employment to others. In addition to these careers which involve research and actual growing of crops, floriculture also provides service career opportunities which include such jobs as floral designers, groundskeepers, landscape designers, architects and horticultural therapists. Such jobs require practitioners to deal directly with clients.

Professional qualification combined with an inclination towards gardening and such other activities produces efficient floriculturists and landscaping professionals. The skills and knowledge required are imparted under the professional courses of floriculture and landscaping.

15)PHOTONICS

What all can light particles- photons, do in our daily lives? Can you imagine about such light that can store information and help to transfer these information through very thin glass fibers that can carry the equal of 300,000,000 simultaneous telephone calls? All these come under Photonics, the technology of light energy. Photonics is considered to be the next generation technology. Just as electronics is the technology of the 20th century, Photonics could be the technology of the 21st century. Even though the Photonic era began in the 1960's with the invention of laser, it made an impact on telecommunication only in the late 70's.

Photonics is a hi-tech subject that evolved as a result of the fusion of optical technology with electronics. It is the use of light to obtain, convey or process information. It is the science of mastering the techniques involved in the emission, detection, transmission and modulation of light. This sub-discipline of physics deals with the study of photons, the elementary particle of light. It also deals with the instruments required such as laser guns, optical fibers, optometric instruments etc. In Photonic system, information signals are conveyed as pulses of light and these optical signals are transmitted through optical fibres. Optical fibres are strands of special glass around 10 micron (100µm) in diameter (i.e about the thickness of a human hair) which can carry thousands of times more information than electrical wires. Photonic devices that are used to convert electrical signals into optical signal and back again where necessary, can be made up from a variety of materials including semi conductors and even optical fibres. These devices are also used to manipulate and process optical signals directly, without the need for conversion.

In recent years, Photonics has become a fundamental technology in worldwide telecommunication, computing, security and many other applications because of its advantage to work more effectively and with much greater speed. The growing numbers of practical applications of Photonics make it an important field both for research and commercial development. The technology of Photonics is used for imaging, health care and medicine, defense, optics and electronics. It has a strong reputation of solving research problems through advanced spectroscopy, lasers, microscopy, and fiber optic imaging. Photonics is also put to use in biotechnology, microbiology, medicinal sciences, surgery and life sciences. It is even applicable for industrial manufacturing, entertainment, metrology which is the science of measurement that deals with weights and measures; and Photonic computing. Photonic computing uses photons of laser light to perform the logic that makes computing work. Apart from these industries, the technology has steadily penetrated into military applications.

Those who have a keen interest in science and its intricacies and are curious to solve questions related to science can pursue Photonics as a career. There is a global demand for skilled people with Photonics training. A Photonics specialist can work as Engineers, technicians, scientists in Photonic companies and as professional officers in universities and Government offices. The nature of work differs with the post held. The scientist has to do more research work on Photonics, while the engineers design Photonic equipments. The Photonics technician helps the engineers in designing and manufacturing.

Eligibility : There are many institutions in India as well as abroad that offer courses in Photonics in order to create well-educated photonic specialists. Those who have passed plus two in the science stream (Physics, Chemistry and Maths) with a minimum mark of 50% are eligible for graduation courses in Photonics and Optoelectronics. A candidate having a Bachelors degree in Physics and Mathematics, Applied Physics or Electronics can pursue M.Sc in Photonics or Optoelectronics. One can obtain MTech, MPhil, and PhD in the field of Photonics and the eligibility is a Masters degree in Physics or Photonics.

There are some diploma courses also that would help one to become a Photonics technician. Two-year technician programme help one to become a photonics technician. Apart from the educational qualifications, some personal skills are required in order to be an expert in Photonics.

The range of application of Photonics extends from energy generation and detection to communication and information processing.

The nature of work differs with the post held. The scientist has to do more research work on Photonics, while the engineers design Photonic equipments. The Photonics technician helps the engineers in designing and manufacturing and also solving problems dealt with, in Photonics. Photonics engineers often start their career as assistants to experienced engineers. Based on qualifications they can either become research directors or principal engineers.

There is much scope for graduates in the field as Photonics industry is in need of more qualified and experienced people. Mostly they could work for telecommunication companies. They could also find key positions in a variety of other industries and R & D organizations involved in the area of networks, semiconductor technology, fiber and integrated optics, optoelectronics and software.

Photonics companies that supply optical components and systems need people who are Photonics graduates and experts to design, manufacture and test photonics components. In industrial manufacturing, a career in photonics is helpful since laser is used for cutting, drilling and welding. In the manufacture of semi-conductors too, photonics is used not only for imaging circuit layers but also for measuring the size and location of patterned features. In automobile manufacture, photonics testing offers advantages over mechanical methods of testing interior and brake noise.

Some of the major companies in the field in India are Eagle Photonics (Bangalore&Chennai), Kwality Photonics Pvt.
